This blog post is more than two years old. It is preserved here in the hope that it is useful to someone, but please be aware that links may be broken and that opinions expressed here may not reflect my current views. If this is a technical article, it may no longer reflect current best practice.

As you’ll see in a previous post, I reverted to Windows on my Amilo, in order to play Steam games. I was very disappointed to discover that on running L4D2, my system blue screened and then rebooted. After some Google-ing, I discovered that there are a lot of idiots in the world. From Yahoo! Canada Answers:

There are 3 step to repair blue screen crash error

If you got blue screen crash error then there is a 94% chance that your computer has registry problems. To repair blue screen crash error you need to follow the steps below:

  • Step 1 – Download a blue screen crash error repair tool, install this error repair tool.
  • Step 2 – Click the Repair All Button. It will scan you pc for Free.
  • Step 3 – Then click the Repair All Button again and your done! It is very easy to repair blue screen crash error.

Yes, the registry is very important to the operation of Windows, but I’m doubting the accuracy of the “94%” that’s quoted there. Under no circumstances should anyone “Download a blue screen crash error repair tool” because blue screens occur where something has gone wrong. If many are finding blue screens with the same problem, the manufacturer of whatever the cause is will fix it, there is no voodoo magic works-for-all application, every case is different. The likelihood in fact is that the application is being installed on your computer, not to fix anything, but to steal your banking details and your first-born son.

In my case, the manufacturer did fix it. The Intel graphics driver I’d used (that is also included in the driver pack I uploaded for XP on the Amilo Li 3710) needed updating. If you’re finding you have this problem, you can visit the Intel download center and download the Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows XP.
