APRS on HF

On Thursday, an email appeared on the hackerspace mailing list proposing an adventure to a distant land where we would operate portable amateur radio stations. Today I went on an adventure to Burghead, a place by the sea approximately 64 miles on a bearing of 305° from my home in Aberdeen. The group embarking on this adventure included Hibby MM3ZRZ, Tom MM6IRQ, Ed MM6MVP and Derecho PA1XOR. We travelled by car and beaconed our journey with APRS-IS on the way.

Streaming APRS data over XMPP

I’ve recently started playing with radios again and I’ve been looking mainly at packet radio. APRS is a system which uses amateur radio to transmit position reports, weather reports, and messages between users. There is an Internet backbone for APRS called APRS-IS that can be used to access a filtered feed of APRS broadcasts. I thought it would be nice if such a feed were also available via XMPP so set about building a gateway.
